Paella Day November 2005

The weather was kind and Coby cooked up a storm for the 50 members at the 2005 Paella Day. As usual the Paella was magnificent and this year we also had a delicious dessert with, you guessed it, a flamed Brule topping. Coby loves his fire!!!!. Speaking of which the entertainers this year were sensational. Kartia and the group from Flamencology Dance Studio at Neutral Bay were not only professional and passionate but embraced the spirit of the day and helped to make it a memorable experience.

Rose was the wine of the day and complimented the Paella exceptionally well. The biggest problem we are having is how to cater for more members. Our apologies to those who missed out this year but popular opinion was that we should have another next year if we can talk Coby into it once again.

Our sincere thanks to Coby and the Flamencology Dance Studio team for their contribution to the day. Please see our links section for contact details.

T“Swingin’ with a Big Band”

Althought the inclement weather caused a damp weekend, it couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the large crowd that turned up to see and hear the fabulous Paul Griffith Big Band on Sunday.

While rain meant transferring the event from the picturesque grounds of Camyr Allyn Wines, East Gresford’s Hotel Beatty provided the perfect atmosphere for those, many from far afield, who made the trip despite the weather.

The Beatty was packed to the rafters with a crowd thrilled by the superb musical fare, not to mention the fine food and wines, on offer.

“We just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to host such a world class group of performers here in Gresford,” said John Evers of Camyr Allyn Wines.

“Paul Griffith is an internationally recognised variety performer, possibly more well-known overseas than in Australia. He’s a top class vocalist but also very much an entertainer.”

“His band is a who’s who of the Australian music industry and the energy produced by a big band can only be appreciated in a live performance.”

“Paul’s guest performer Danielle Everett is a rising international star both in concert and musical theatre. Her voice was magic!”

“While it was a shame not to be able to present this great show in our grounds, especially during Spring, we are negotiating to get Paul and his band back again next year. We’ll either have a spectacular concert in the vineyard or break another drought!”

“Of course, we’d like to thank the Beatty for helping us out when we needed a venue change. As it turned out, it made the day very special indeed. Thanks also to the Gresford Rural Fire Service for their excellent support on the day,” said John Evers.

Many of those who made the trip to Gresford were long time fans of Paul Griffith and they weren’t in the least disappointed by the change of venue. In fact, it was a rare treat for a major concert act to perform at such close quarters. Many commented that it was an excellent opportunity to see Paul in an intimate atmosphere.

The 12-piece big band swung their way through the timeless music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and a host of others. Paul Griffith and Danielle Everett delighted the crowd with a great show and clearly enjoyed the atmosphere of the Beatty.

Certainly, having professionals of this calibre performing locally was a real treat. No doubt, a return performance at the vineyard in 2006 would be very well received.

Wine Dinner Sept 2005

We recently conducted a Wine dinner at the Beatty Hotel in East Gresford. This multi coursed dinner was presented by Chef Deborah in the Victoria Room and each course matched with a Camyr Allyn wine presented by our winemaker James. A guest wine was featured alone with a mystery wine competition. The cost was $50 per head with 10% being donated to the Gresford News towards the renewal of the photocopier.
It is hoped this will be the forerunner of a Gresford Wine Club Dinner.

Jumbuck Day June 2005

What could we hold in winter to match the Paella day?
On the phone to Coby and we decided on a Jumbuck Day down by the Billabong.
Seven camp ovens, lamb shank stew with damper and the exciting bush band State 51.

How could we better that? Well it just so happened that I had recently caught up with an old school mate of mine Warren Fahey. Warren founded the legendary ‘Larricans’ and has devoted his life to bush music. What a brilliant performance he gave.

The “day” finished well into the night and we discovered that Coby is also a pyromaniac and would not stop throwing logs on the fire. Thanks to all our friends who helped make this such a special day.

Paella Day October 2004
It all started when Coby visited our Cellar Door and in conversation asked when we burnt our prunings. We said October why? “I have a couple of Paella dishes and the best way to cook Paella is with prunings”. So the seeds of the Paella day were sown and indeed the start of a wonderful friendship with Coby and Robyn.
Coby Du Preez is one of our special club member who has a very successful business in Sydney called Muscle Medicine. He specializes in Remedial and Lymphatic Drainage Massage and you can contact him via his website www.musclemedicine.com.au
Apart from massage Coby’s passion is cooking and he really cooked up a storm on the Paella
Day. The Paella was delicious, Carlos played a great guitar and the dancers were just fantastic. All agreed it was a great day and it gave us confidence to organize a second day in June.
